§ About Merrow

Merrow: over 185 years of specialty stitching

The company that pioneered the overlock

In 1838, J. Makens Merrow established a manufacturing operation in Connecticut. Within a generation the Merrow family had moved from knitting machinery into sewing-machine design, and in 1877 Joseph M. Merrow patented an early crochet machine. The overlock stitch followed, and over later decades Merrow built a patent portfolio covering shell-stitching, butt-seaming, emblem edging and specialty joining. Merrow states that it is the oldest sewing-machine manufacturer still operating in the United States, and that it still supplies parts for many of its older models.

Why Al Borj chose Merrow for the region

Al Borj has been equipping textile and garment factories across the UAE and the wider GCC since 1987. Merrow was the natural partner for specialty finishing: decorative emblem edges, activewear seams, crochet blanket borders and the industrial joining of carpet, Kevlar and geotextiles, all from one manufacturer. We hold common parts and consumables in the UAE, so common needle systems and wear parts are here when you need them.

Questions, answered

Merrow machines: common questions

What is the Merrow MG-3U and what does it produce?

The MG-3U is an emblem edging machine. It sews a three-thread overlock edge on emblems, patches, badges and insignia. Merrow calls the Merrow Edge the standard bearer for emblem edging on smaller patches, badges and insignia, and describes the stitch as consistent and even in coverage. Merrow states that lightweight moving parts and high tolerance needle bearings give the fast, clean starts and stops that intermittent emblem work needs. It carries a manufacturer warranty, and Al Borj supplies it with local installation and training across the UAE and the wider GCC. Contact us for full specifications and current warranty terms.

Which Merrow machine is right for activewear and technical knits?

For activewear and technical knits, Merrow's answer is the ActiveSeam stitch, sewn on the Merrow MB-4DFO. Merrow describes ActiveSeam as a flat overlock stitch and offers it as an alternative to flatlock, interlock and overlock stitching on sewn garments. Merrow states that the machine was developed for base layer garments, and that the ActiveSeam stitches are flat, comfortable and stretchable. Merrow builds the MB-4DFO 2 Series in versions 2.1 to 2.4 and configures each one to the customer's own material and thread. Tell us your fabric weight and the seam you need, and we will confirm the right version and quote it. See the Merrow MB-4DFO 2.1.

What is the Merrow crochet edge and which machine produces it?

The Merrow crochet edge is a decorative looped border. Merrow states that Joseph Millard Merrow devised the first Merrow crochet machine in 1868, that the crochet machine was patented in 1877, and that the early machines in the family workshop finished the tops of men's socks in place of handwork. Today the 18-E sews a flat crochet stitch on blanket and garment edges. Merrow states it is often used on blankets, pillows, shawls, hats and mittens, and that the stitch rivals hand sewing while running at production speed. Al Borj supplies and services the 18-E across the UAE.

Does Al Borj provide installation, training and parts support for Merrow machines?

Yes. We handle delivery, installation and operator training for all Merrow machines across the UAE and the wider GCC. We hold common Merrow needle systems, wear parts and consumables in the UAE to minimise downtime. Annual maintenance contracts are available.
