Juki describes the L-1A as a direct drive single needle lockstitch machine with an automatic thread trimmer, a nipper and an automatic reverse feed device. Trimming and reverse feed sit on the machine, so the operator handles less between operations.

Juki states that the nipper pulls the needle thread to the underside of the material at the start of sewing, that the machine uses a single blade drive rotary thread trimming mechanism, and that an LED light adjustable across three steps and a USB port are standard on the series.
